30 Day Challenge

I would like to issue a 30 day challenge to all of you.  For 30 days (you pick you start and stop days), stop watching shows that pollute your mind with garbage (shows that have to “bleep” out 90% of what is being said), stop watching the NEWS since all they seem to do these days is politicize everything and never report the news.  Turn your radio station to a Christian station while you commute around town (yes you can find one).  Read a book, choose one that is clean and wholesome or you might want to read about our history or a good biography (the Bible is a good book to read), sit on your porch, go talk to your neighbor, volunteer at a shelter, etc.

When our kids were little and in school we had a rule for TV during the week, from Sunday night through Thursday night they had only 2 hours of TV allowed for those 5 days.  They got to choose when they would watch a show they wanted.  They could choose 2 hours in one night and be done or break it up over a few days.  Those were some great days (and yes my wife and I abided by the same rules).  We would read together, do homework, study the Bible and play games, and guess what, they world didn’t zoom pass us and leave us behind, as a matter of fact I realized then that I didn’t need news in my head 18 hours a day and I sure didn’t miss the garbage most stations were broadcasting.  We listened to Christian music and realized how calming it was and how more relaxed we were in everyday life.  We didn’t miss it at all and soon even on their “free days” (Friday and Saturday), the kids wanted to do things like we had been doing all week.  You will be amazed at what a little quietness will do for you.

Now some of you have just gone into panic mode, because football season is about to start and you can’t see yourself giving up that.  Remember you choose what you give up for 30 days and in that 30 days when you would normally do that activity, replace it with something wholesome and clean (ideally I would love for it to be some Bible reading quiet time, but that again is up to you).

I promise you this, if you give up something not good for you for 30 days and replace it with something that is good for you for 30 days; you will come out of it a better person.  You know the old saying, “garbage in = garbage out”.  This is why we read in Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

What a great time to be still and know that He is God!
